Edgar Heim's Books

Many developing countries do not have any field guides about their plant life. For my own sake I compiled my personal field guides and got a lot of compliments and encouragement while traveling. So I decided to publish the first volume of Edgar’s Plant Guides, the "Flora of Arequipa, Peru".

As one of my sons moved to Bali in Indonesia, I published the second volume of Edgar’s Plant Guides: “Flora and Vegetation of Bali, Indonesia”.

I advise all interested parties of ordering the booklets in Europe (eg. www.amazon.de or directly at www.Bod.de, the publisher). My publisher informed me that his US partner is not capable to print the pictures in color and the books ordered in the US and Canada are delivered with black in white pictures. My publisher promised that in ordering in Europe you will get a fully colored copy, the pictures included.

Flora of Arequipa, Peru

This field guide illustrates and describes ca. 20% of the recorded 1'160 vascular plants of the department of Arequipa in Southern Peru. It aims to be a comprehensive field guide for tourists and locals. The first part of the book describes the vegetation of Arequipa. It gives an overview of the harsh conditions of south-peruvian ecosystems. Bone-dry deserts and high mountains with extreme temperature fluctuations challenges plant growth. Such ecosystmes demand adaptation by the inhabitants, especially by the plants, which can not escape their habitat. The second part of the book is dedicated to the plant species of the departement of Arequipa. With the illustrations and the description in this book, the reader should be able to recognize the plants in their habitat. Additionally it provides information about the use and the ecology of the described species.

The book is available at the publisher Books on Demand or at any internet bookshop.

Flora and Vegetation of Bali, Indonesia

This well illustrated field guide describes about 500 of the most common and eye-catching plants growing on Bali and the adjacent Java, most of them are illustrated with pictures. It is a comprehensive and valuable field guide for tourists and locals. The first part of the book describes the vegetation of Bali. It gives an overview of the Balinese ecosystems. Monsoon forests in the south, moist rainforests in the mountains and dry deciduous forests on the northern slopes generate patterns of unique ecosystems all over the island. The second part of the book is dedicated to the plant species living on Bali. With 400 pictures and their accurate descriptions, the reader should be able to recognize the different species in its habitat. Additionally the book provides information about the traditional und the commercial use of the described plants and characterizes their ecological behavior. The field guide is an essential travel companion for all who love nature.

The book is available at the publisher Books on Demand or at any internet bookshop.
